A
Day in the Life of a First Year Missionary
Radical
discipleship for college students wanting to follow Jesus' model
What’s
a typical day like for an FYM?
This is probably the most
asked and hardest question to answer. We can’t tell you
exactly what a “typical day” would be, because each
day is full of surprises and the Lord! However, there’s
a general pattern of structure to each day:
Mornings –Every morning the FYMs wake up, and take care of their morning routine to be ready for an hour or so quiet time after breakfast. Following quiet time, there is a group discipleship time. This may be one of the six hours of more formal discipleship and teaching FYMs get each week or a family ministry time. One morning a week is set aside for free time.
Afternoons – The afternoon
is a different ballgame for each student. FYMs will typically
spend this time in some combination of their internship and mission
mobilization, helping high school and college students prepare
for short-term trips.
Evenings –
The days end differently, too. Some nights, all
the FYMs and staff will come together in family prayer, or students
may do so with their RAs in their respective houses. Others may
include ministry, outreach, or evening debriefs. One night a week
is “Family Night,” where the entire group will get
together for dinner and a fun activity. Weekends
– Again, each family is different, and planned family activities will take into account the interests and dynamics of the team. Some weekends are totally free, others may be full of ministry. Many FYM’s have responsibilities in their churches on Sundays. Each FYM may also choose where they will attend church.
For all its flexibility, the daily life of a FYM reflects
the objectives of the FYM program.
